Notes in the Margin

State of the Arts by Alke Schmidt.

State of the Arts by Alke Schmidt.
Text Reads: "I do not want art for a few, any more than education for a few, or freedom for a few."

Start: 2nd September 2006
End: 16th September 2006

This exhibition features digital photography and mixed media artworks by Liz Ellis, Cinzia Cremona and Alke Schmidt.

'Notes in the Margin' brings together three women artists who are interested in exploring cultural and political issues that relate to life in Walthamstow (North East London).

As well as touching upon the historical, political and cultural issues connected with the area of Walthamstow, this exhibition also seeks to address the wider implications of the way Walthamstow has changed over the years. Successive economical and social transformations have resulted in a community that reflects the changing cultural and religious character of contemporary Britain.

Liz Ellis - Print & Photography

Various works by Liz Ellis will be shown at Vestry House Museum. Liz's photographic prints and multiples feature weeds growing in Waltham Forest, which refer to the tenacity of nature in a range of domestic and industrial settings.

Cinzia Cremona - Photography

Cinzia Cremona will also be exhibiting work at Vestry House Museum. Cinzia's 'Come Closer' invites viewers to share in the complicity between the artist and Shaida, a young woman living according to Muslim law, who has recently started covering her face. The images capture moments of dialogue and intimacy that go beyond cultural and religious differences.

One of Cinzia Cremona's photographs will also be exhibited in the shop window of Islamic Relief [156 Hoe Street], which is half-way between Vestry House Museum and the Willaim Morris Gallery.

Alke Schmidt - Mixed Media

Alke Schmidt's mixed media works are to be shown at both the Vestry House Museum and William Morris Gallery. Alke's artworks confront present cultural politics in Walthamstow, using the rich legacy of William Morris for inspiration.

'Notes in the Margin' will be based at two London venus:
Vestry House Museum and the William Morris Gallery.
